What is PRIDE in Healthcare?
We are a registered student organization of the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Our name stands for Promoting Recognition of Identity, Dignity, and Equality in Healthcare. Our main goals are to improve the conditions of healthcare for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people—and for those who may not identify as LGBT, but who do not have strictly hetero-normative sexual practices, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We also hope to increase quality and quantity of LGBT content in medical education, to raise awareness of LGBT health disparities and their causes while cooperating with professional and community members, and to provide a social forum for LGBTQ/allied students and professionals in the health sciences.
Who can attend meetings? Who can be a member?
Meetings are open to anyone, but student members make the decisions. Membership is open to all students in graduate-level health sciences programs at UW-Madison: MD, pharmacy, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy, genetic counseling, and public health.
What does PRIDE in Healthcare do?
In order to serve our peers, improve the health of the community, and combine our efforts with other organizations, we organize cultural competency workshops for our peers, seek experts for talks and panel discussions, examine school curricula, and recommend changes partner with community organizations like OutReach.
